How Many Do I Need ?
Pocket Diapers
The whole diaper will need to be changed when you use pockets. |
The number of cloth diapers you need depends on the
age of your baby, how often you plan to wash diapers and what style you choose. You will need
fewer diapers in each size as you baby grows, if you go with one size you shouldn't need to buy again ~ unless you have a older bed wetter, then you can save even more money on CLOTH pull-ups!
You can extend the absorbency of diapers by using a diaper doubler, using two pre-folds or using newborn pre-folds as doublers for older babies.
If you can't afford to invest in a lot of cloth diapers all at once, you can start with one day's (or even half a day) worth of diapers and then add more the next time you get paid. Buying one diaper a week or month while you are pregnant or as you go along is a great way to build your stash and save money!
You will want to get a few extra diapers to have on hand while you are washing cloth diapers. Nothing is worse than having a sick baby (or sick mama or papa) and no clean diapers.
Newborns go through more cloth diapers then an older baby. A newborn will typically go through 10-12 diapers in a day. A six month old and up requires about 6-10 diapers a day. Typically a set-up of 24-36 diapers would get you through 2-3 days.
The number of covers may also vary depending on the type of cloth diaper you will be using. Diaper covers are not needed for All-In-Ones or for Pocket Diapers. You will only need covers based on the number of flats, prefolds, pods, fitted, or contoured diapers (also known as inserts) you will be using.
It is always a good idea to have one more diaper than you think you need in case one gets dirty at a bad time!
Wool can go even longer between washes if they are properly lanolized when they are washed. Properly lanolized wool diaper covers can be washed every 10-12 days or longer as long as they smell fresh.
PUL diaper covers are easily cleaned and dry quickly if the need to handwash one arises between loads of laundry.
Pocket diapers and all in one diapers do not need covers. You will need to have at least 1 insert for each day time pocket diaper and 2-3 inserts for each night time diaper. Hemp is a great choice for extra absorbency for heavy wetters or overnight.
A good rule of thumb is 10-12 cloth diapers per day for the amount of days you won’t be washing.
Basically, the more diapers you have in your cloth diaper rotation means each diaper is getting used less and washed less. This results in a lot less wear and tear on your diapers and they remain in better shape in order for you to be able to sell them, give them away, or save them for use on future babies.
